Gloss lamination gives the strongest shine and colour lift, matt reduces reflection for a calmer finish, and soft-touch adds a velvety feel. The correct choice depends on handling, scuff risk, photography, writing requirements and end-of-life, not simply which option sounds most premium.
What lamination changes
Lamination bonds a thin film to the printed sheet. It changes surface reflection, feel and resistance to handling. It can add stiffness, protect heavy ink coverage and create a stable base for foil or spot effects. It does not make ordinary paper waterproof, and it cannot rescue weak artwork or an unsuitable substrate.
Because film changes the material combination, it can also affect recyclability. If sustainability is a priority, ask whether lamination is necessary, whether a suitable coating or varnish can perform the job, and how the finished item is likely to be disposed of.
Gloss, matt and soft-touch compared
Gloss reflects light and increases perceived saturation, which can suit food, travel, event and product photography. Fingerprints and glare may be more visible. Matt gives a quieter, lower-reflection surface and often improves readability under bright light, though dark solid colours can show handling marks.
Soft-touch is a matt film with a distinct tactile character. It can make covers and presentation pieces feel substantial, but the benefit is lost on disposable items. Anti-scuff matt films are worth discussing for dark covers, folders and packaging that must survive packing and transport.
Think about what happens after lamination
Folds, creases, glueing, foil and die cutting all interact with the laminated sheet. Heavy cover stock should be creased correctly to avoid cracking. Some glues need an unlaminated area or a film designed for bonding. Foil adhesion varies by film, so the printer should plan the complete sequence.
If the customer must write, stamp or apply a label, test the exact pen, ink or adhesive. Many laminated surfaces resist ordinary ballpoint ink and some labels. A writable panel can be left unlaminated or specified with a suitable coating.
One-sided or two-sided lamination
A cover may be laminated outside only, while a loose card may need both faces protected. Laminating one side can encourage curl because the film and paper react differently to moisture and heat. Stock weight, grain direction, coverage and storage conditions influence the result.
Ask whether the piece will be mailed, stacked, displayed near moisture or repeatedly cleaned. Two-sided film can help durability, but it adds cost and material. Protect the surfaces that genuinely need it.
How to specify lamination clearly
State the film type, sides, finished size, stock and any later processes. “Matt laminated” is incomplete if a folder must also be glued or a cover must accept foil. Request a finished sample on a similar dark or light design, not a generic swatch.
For a range of materials, decide whether every item needs the same finish. A durable matt folder can sit alongside unlaminated letterheads and recycled inserts. Consistency comes from colour, typography and stock logic as much as one surface treatment.
| Finish | Appearance | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Gloss | Bright, reflective, saturated | Photography and high-impact colour |
| Matt | Low reflection, restrained | Readable covers and corporate print |
| Soft-touch | Velvety matt surface | Premium handled pieces |
| Anti-scuff matt | Matt with better mark resistance | Dark covers and packaging |
Common questions
Is matt lamination recyclable?
It creates a mixed material and local acceptance varies. Ask whether a recyclable coating or no lamination can meet the performance need.
Can you foil on top of lamination?
Yes, with compatible films and foil. The printer should test adhesion and plan the production sequence.
Does lamination stop folded print cracking?
It can protect ink, but heavy stock still needs correct grain direction and creasing. Lamination alone is not a substitute for proper folding preparation.
